COBRA Premium Assistance Extension

COBRA Premium Assistance Extension On December 19, 2009, President Obama signed into law the 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations bill, which includes legislation extending the COBRA premium assistance provisions originally enacted in the American Recovery And Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). Plan administrators should update COBRA eligibility and election notices to include the extended assistance information.

In addition, The Department of Labor's Employee Benefits Security Administration COBRA page now has available model notices updated for the extension provisions of the 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act. They are available at http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/COBRAmodelnotice.html



COBRA Premium Assistance After the Economic Stimulus Bill

COBRA Premium Assistance After the Economic Stimulus Bill President Barack Obama signed the economic stimulus bill into law on Tuesday February 17, 2009. The bill contains premium assistance for COBRA qualified beneficiaries who are involuntarily terminated between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2009.

Employers that sponsor group health plans need to change their COBRA administration practices to comply with the new law.
