SAME-SEX MARRIAGE LAWS IN THE UNITED STATES
(Current as of December 15, 2014)

As of June 15, 2014, same-sex marriage is allowed in seventeen states and the District of Columbia. Some states allow civil unions or domestic partnerships with rights similar or equivalent to the rights accorded to same-sex marriage; however, the Supreme Court's decision in Windsor does not apply to those partnerships and civil unions even though many employers have chosen to extend benefits to them.

The law is rapidly changing in light of the recent decisions, and future government guidance is expected. The effective dates provided attempt to capture the applicable time periods, but like the state of the law, the dates are nuanced and vary in meaning depending upon the circumstances of the individual jurisdiction. It will continue to be essential to consult state law and the applicable federal agencies. Please remember that the information contained in this chart is not legal advice. Consultation with a lawyer is strongly advised for further analysis and explanation.
