James Goodnow is a partner in the firm’s litigation section and member of Fennemore Craig’s five-person Management Committee. He handles catastrophic injury, wrongful death and technology-related legal matters.
Goodnow has been recognized for his knowledge of technology and the law. In a cover story, the ABA Journal — the official publication of the American Bar Association — named him one of “America's Techiest Lawyers.” Tech giant Apple selected Goodnow as the first lawyer ever to be featured in one of its global commercials and profiled him and his colleagues on Apple.com. The Wall Street Journal wrote that “Goodnow, a partner in Fennemore” uses technology to help clients “buttress their cases” and “bolster their legal claims.” The Financial Times has lauded his “novel approach” to the law.
He regularly appears in the media. Goodnow, his cases or both have been covered by CNN, NBC News, Today, ABC News, Good Morning America, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Forbes and more. He also frequently offers legal commentary and analysis to the national and local media. (View select media clips below or at LegalCommentator.com.)
Goodnow has received many awards and accolades. Newsweek showcased him as one of “20 Leaders” among “Plaintiffs' Trial Lawyers” in the United States. The National Trial Lawyers selected Goodnow for inclusion in its “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” list. He has been recognized by SuperLawyers and named a Legal Network “top attorney.” His peers have given him the highest-possible Martindale peer-review rating: AV-Preeminent.
He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, where he participated in the Program on Negotiation. Building on this foundation, he presents regularly on advanced negotiation and leadership. Goodnow received a BS from Santa Clara University, where he was elected Phi Beta Kappa and graduated first in his class.
Goodnow is active in the community. As a father of two, he has donated his time to helping create, draft and pass legislation aimed at saving the lives of children. He is a board member of the National Kidney Foundation of Arizona. He is an active member of his church. He has volunteered his time at the Arizona Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, where he has also served as a board member. Within the firm, he helps new lawyers hone their trial skills as co-chair of the firm’s Advocacy Training Program. He also chairs the firm’s Diversity and Retention Council. Every year he handles countless cases on behalf of victims pro-bono, and he has been selected and served pro-bono as a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Pro Tempore.
He is admitted in Arizona, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Illinois and New York.
